milestones…

jackson turns 6 months on wednesday. i can hardly believe our son is half of a year old. the time has flown by, and from what i am told by other parents, it will continue to do so.
paul and i can’t tell if this 6 month milestone is what is causing the turn-around that we see taking place with jackson’s eating… but we can’t help but wonder about his little digestive system maturing with age, and think to ourselves that maybe, just maybe we’re seeing a little light at the end of our tunnel.
this weekend brought the same turmoil that last weekend did. we had once again changed out jackson’s ng tube and doing so induced vomiting. at the time, we were 10 days away from reevaluating our tube situation with the gi doctor, but jackson apparently didn’t want to wait 10 more days. upon consulting with jackson’s feeding therapist and gi doc, paul and i pulled the ng tube out and have been successfully feeding jackson orally since saturday. while the volume of what jackson is taking in is not quite as good as we would like, we feel so encouraged by jackson’s amazing progress.
interestingly enough, the gi doc told me over the weekend that he has occasionally seen babies who, after a given amount of time with an ng tube, decide their body no longer needs it. when this happens, the body tries to expel the tube which manifests itself in the form of vomiting. so according to this theory, jackson was telling us that he no longer needs the tube… we just had to translate his baby language. :)
jackson is averaging about 5 ounces of formula through the propel water bottle. in addition to that, he is shoveling in as many baby jars of fruit as possible. he LOVES his solids!!! by the end of yesterday, jackson had totaled 25 ounces and paul and i went to bed very happy.
also, with the tube being out, jackson is sleeping through the night again. this is HUGE for us because for the last month or so that the tube has been in, jackson woke up every single time he lost his pacifier. we think that with the tube causing him to produce more saliva in his mouth, he needed the pacifier to help him swallow that many more times throughout each night. with the tube out, jackson no longer has that need and can sleep through the night again.
paul and i have experienced our own milestone in the last 2 days because they have been what we would call “good days” for jackson… and we had two in a row! we actually took jackson on a walk up to our favorite sandwich shop and enjoyed an afternoon outside with our son while he took a nap in his stroller…. something that jackson NEVER does because he’s always been uncomfortable in one way or another and unsatisfied. not only did jackson allow paul and i to enjoy some time together while he rested, but we also went to meet baby zach! our dear “family” friends, phil and sarah, had their second child, zachary philip, last weekend when we were in pennsylvania for the wedding. talk about a milestone!!! phil and sarah are parents again and doing such a wonderful job raising miss lil and now baby zach. being able to take jackson over for a visit without having him throw a fit out of hunger was huge for us.
finally i marked (literally) jackson’s 6 month milestone on my other wrist this weekend. :) i had been talking to paul about tattooing jackson’s name and birthdate on my wrist for a while now, and this weekend seemed as good a time as any to actually do it.
i think i can speak for both paul and i when i say that the last 6 months have been the MOST stressful that we have endured yet. to think that we may be turning a corner here, as jackson turns 6 months old, is a thought that i never could’ve imagined entering my brain. stay tuned…. things seem to change on a dime for us, but hopefully our changes will continue in a positive direction.

shout out

hi everyone! jackson wanted to post a shout out to all his peeps out there. paul was telling me this afternoon that friends of ours in the squadron (jimmy and audrey) have been keeping updated on our blog. you guys never cease to amaze me! honestly, i have no clue who all sees the sometimes serious, sometimes silly little tidbits that i post on here…. i really don’t. the link gets passed around here and there and sometimes i get feedback, but you never really know who sees these things. i guess i’m just glad to know that it’s sweet and wonderful people, like jimmy and audrey, who do read this and find enjoyment in catching up on our sweet magoo. so hiiiii!!!! (from jackson)

eating update

sorry folks! i know we have been MIA for a while with our whirlwind wedding weekend in pennsylvania. i will post a few of my favorite pics from the wedding soon… but, i have heard that people are wondering how jackson is doing, when the tube is coming out, etc. as of today, jackson is doing GREAT! we had a bit of a set-back last thursday… jackson and i set out for atlanta to teach grammy and granda the ins and outs of tube feeding. (paul and i met up in the atl airport on friday to continue on to the wedding). anyway, thursday night i found blood in jackson’s feeding tube. (yes, i went nuts!) grammy and i went to the hospital thursday night with jackson to find out that his tube was too far down in his belly and pushing on the “pilorax” (spelling?) muscle. apparently this muscle, which sits in between the stomach and intestines, can cause vomiting when irritated… so maybe jackson didn’t have a stomach bug afterall… so we remove the irritating tube, insert a new one, go through a number of x-rays to make sure it is in the right place, and around midnight friday morning, we head back to grammy and granda’s house. jackson is then awake until about 3:30 in the morning and i sleep for 2 hours til my alarm goes off at 5:30 to meet paul in the airport and head up to penn for the wedding. ha!!! the things we do for “family.” :)
with that drama aside, jackson had an awesome weekend with grammy and granda, and he did so well in fact that paul and i stayed an extra day in penn!!! after calling grammy at 1 am and asking if it was ok that they keep jackson for another day, we switched our flights, and enjoyed a FULL DAY, AN ENTIRE 24 HOURS, just us!!!! it was GREAT and much needed. paul and i are never spontaneous like that and sweet grammy and granda just went with it. :) THANK YOU GRAMMY AND GRANDA!!!
oh right, so back to jackson’s feeding…. (i’m supposed to be updating you on that)… ha! he really is doing so well. paul and i are constantly finding ourselves saying “gosh, he feels larger. he’s porking up.” his tube feeding are going very well and he is LOVING his solids right now. we had a break through today at therapy with teri. JACKSON DRANK FROM A BOTTLE!!! this was a propel fit water bottle with a mouth-type spout on it. we thicken his formula with rice cereal and applesauce to the consistency of a milkshake. he LOVES it!!!! teri did this with him at therapy today. when i did jackson’s afternoon feeding with it, jackson had 3 ounces in 4 minutes! i sobbed like a baby, called paul at work for the first time in a looooong time with exciting and wonderful news about jackson… then called my mother (of course)…. then called teri and left an obnoxious message with me snotting and crying and thanking her because i hadn’t seen my son eat like this EVER!!! needless to say folks, my hopes were up… and so when paul came home for the evening feeding, i was AMAZED to see that jackson had 5 ounces in 4 minutes with him and this propel bottle.
i think we may be on to something here my friends, and it is so awesome to see. :) keep up the prayers and positive thinking! the tube is scheduled to come out on oct. 28th so the clock is ticking…. should this propel fit water bottle be “the thing” for jackson, i plan on buying all the bottles that are in existence and investing in the company’s stock. maybe then our market will improve… :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!

we celebrated paul’s birthday last week (oct. 9th). according to paul, his favorite “gift” was simply opening with his family… our magoo has developed a love of tissue paper… thanks to red’s influence. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD! I LOVE YOU! love, jackson

welcome to parenthood!

we have a house of vomiting diarrheas this morning! jackson has been fussier than normal this weekend… we assumed it was because he is teething like a maniac, but then jackson threw up like a maniac on saturday. paul and i had never experienced this before, only his spitting up which he hardly even notices. well this was ENTIRELY different. poor jackson turned green and puked his guts out (nice, huh?) since paul and i weren’t feeling totally pukey yet ourselves, we thought maybe we had overfed jackson through his tube. oh no no… while jackson didn’t throw up yesterday, he was extremely fussy and icky looking. i started to feel kinda funky yesterday, so i started pumping my body full of immuno shield to ward off any nastiness. so far i’m doing alright… paul on the other hand is not and is fighting off this grossness he picked up from jackson. he couldn’t do his prt (physical readiness test) this morning, and i’m hoping he comes home a little early today to get some rest.
i took jackson to the pediatrician this morning to do a weight check and see how to combat the vomiting diarrheas for him with his tube. the GREAT news is that in 2 weeks of jackson having the tube, he has gained a pound!!! :) the GOOD news is that with the tube in place, we can pump his little body full of pedialyte to keep him hydrated while he is sick. the BAD news is that when i called to cancel his feeding therapy session for today, teri told me that a stomach bug is going through the clinic right now and it is lasting 24-36 hours. (then she told me, “welcome to parenthood.”) soooo…. the clock is ticking…. i’ve got 24-36 hours to kill this beast of a bug because paul and i have andrew and molly’s wedding this weekend and we are NOT (i repeat NOT) going to miss that no matter what. paul is in the wedding and i don’t care if he pukes while walking down the aisle, WE ARE GOING!!! uncle andrew and aunt molly are the last of “the family” to get married, and this wedding is something we have been looking forward to for months. we will be celebrating andrew and molly as well as reconnecting with “family” members who have been in washington state for the last 3 years. so bring it on you vomiting diarrheas!!! i will beat you!!!
i am channeling kate from “jon and kate plus 8″ and entrenching myself in vomit-laundry (for those of you who have seen that episode, you know what i’m talking about). i am also channeling my mother and disinfecting my entire house, as well as enforcing the “b-r-a-t diet”.
ok, so does this officially make me a mom now??? my end of the day treat for myself will be a
hair cut, which i will be fantasizing about all day long. 5:30 pm cannot come any faster. :) ~
