One nap, two naps, no naps… OOPS!
It’s great to be able to say that Jackson is eating well. That should definitely be noted, because he is; he’s eating like a champ. Not putting any weight on (because he’s too much of a busy-body) but eating very well, nonetheless.
To reference the superb children’s author, Sandra Boynton, I title this post “one nap, two naps, no naps… OOPS,” honoring her brilliant, Blue Hat, Green Hat, because her book(s) are that good.
I digress… Jackson’s naps suck. I don’t know if there’s some sort of anti-napping-growth-spurt that babies hit right before they turn 1, but if there is, Jackson’s hit that. If that doesn’t exist, then I throw my hands in the air because I don’t know why the hell my kid won’t nap. He’s wears himself out, that’s for sure. He “should” (ugh, that word again) be sleepy and nap… but he doesn’t.
So, I decided to consult others on the topic of naps, or not napping, rather.
“When do your girls nap?” I ask my french press coffee friend, amongst other parents who have bright-eyed, non-exhausted little one(s) running about on the playground.
And most people have a definitive answer to this question… they have some sort of schedule/routine/something that they go by. I don’t. Jackson is 11 months old, and I have no routine. Never did. Never will (?)
I remember my friend Sarah telling me, when she had her (now 3 year old) daughter, Lily, that if she didn’t establish a routine, she would lose her mind. And, here I am, 3 years later… So when Jackson was brand-new, I called Sarah remembering her predicament those years ago… I was (am) losing my mind, desperate for a routine, searching for something to grasp hold of.
I still haven’t found “it,” the niche, the sacred holy grail when it comes to taking care of one’s spawn. WTF?! I still have no routine. Nothing to bank on. I do not know what waits for me around the next corner, so to speak. I still do not know what to expect. I still know nothing. NOTHING.
So what’s up with these naps??? Because “supposedly” one gets to the point where one’s child takes ONE nap a day… and in the words of my mother, “it’s one major nap, like, out for the whole afternoon.”
My eyes widen to think, nay imagine, the possibility…
If this is true, this whole “one major nap” thing, then I have a few more months to go… assuming that Jackson goes along with “the norm,” which he has never done.
So, three months from now, when Jackson hits this 14 month marker, I’m coming back to you people… I’m coming back, and handing my no-napping magoo over to you and saying, “Here. You try.”

I’m glad he’s eating! I certainly don’t know anything about how to get kids to nap. Benadryl knocks me out, but you probably shouldn’t drug your baby! : )
the little girl i nannied for never napped. when i started, she was 13 months old, and was ‘supposed’ to take two naps a day. her parents could NEVER get her down for a nap. i would walk her in the morning, in her stroller, trying to lull her to sleep for an hour. same thing in the afternoon. she would usually do one nap. maybe for an hour, at most, on a good day. i once witnessed her poking herself in the eye with her finger while trying to keep herself from falling asleep. she would nod off and force herself awake. she loathed naps. some kids just don’t want to miss anything is what i figured.
Good luck on the nap thing. I managed to get my twins on a schedule. We’ve switched to one nap, but I’m lucky if it last an hour. It’s usually about 45 minutes. If I’m lucky they sleep 1 and a 1/2 hours.
Hayden (who is now 26-months old), dropped to one nap when he was 10-months old.
We have a nap routine and sometimes he goes through phases where he “fights it”… he is in one of those phases now, but he NEEDS his nap. It is a struggle to get him down, but he is sleeping right now and will probably be for at least another hour…
GOOD LUCK! It’s not easy, so I wish you the best of luck with your no-napping little one!
Bonus points for the Boynton quote. I quote the great Lily Hoblet, who said: “No, no, NO naps!” Perhaps it’s a good thing she and Jackson live across the country from each other!
Right there with you!! My little one just turned 9 months and she has never napped well. I get mixed messages when I ask for ‘help’… my mother in law says “some kids just don’t nap.” My friends say… “Gee, it sounds like you need to start sleep training.” WHAT?! My mother-in-law is more pleasant than my friends?! Who’da thunk it?!
Whe the hell is “sleep training” anyway?! It’s not like I’m already working hard as it is!
Good luck to you and sweet magoo! We hear you!!
Good luck with the napping situation – i don’t think Bella got into her napping routine until we moved to Sicily (when she was about nine months old). I have no idea how i did it, but i must say, she was a much happier baby when she got her two naps a day. She went down to one a day at about 20 months, and man do i miss that extra nap
By the way, we love Sandra Boynton too! Do you have Moo, baa, la la la? That is one of Bella’s favorite books – we’ve actually memorized the whole thing and she loves to make all the different animal noises.
Tell Paul we said hi and give Jackson a big kiss and hug from us!
My daughter never took a nap. She was the only child in preschool and kindergarten who did not nap. She was allowed to just sit on her blanket and look at books, and by age 4 was reading. She never fell asleep before 10PM, either. My second daughter was the complete opposite. She can fall asleep at the drop of a hat..even through action movies, and she ‘s now 20.
