postheadericon conversation via twitter with sherri shepherd

i don’t know where to begin with this… while still outraged at what is taking place in terms of roman polanski and his team of “rape rape” supporters (whoopi- i am not saying you are one of them. i’m saying they are out there and have made it known they support this rapist), i’m making an attempt to stifle those feelings momentarily in order to share a candid conversation i had with sherri shepherd, co-host of “The View.” she was kind enough to take the time to answer the thousands of tweets that have gone out today regarding my post yesterday.

i offer many thanks to sherri (can i call you sherri now?) for responding to my tweets and to those who retweeted my tweets all day long.

a very VERY special thanks to @MommyGeekology for keeping my site up and running and being my techy guru while it nearly crashed this morning with all the traffic it was receiving. thank you @dashoff for helping me put together this conversation with sherri via twitter because i plain old don’t know how to do that. i just write words.

lastly, and most importantly, THANK YOU to those of you who are speaking out, offering support, opinions, and letting your voices be heard. regardless of where you stand on this particular issue or any other, it has become overwhelmingly clear to me today that one voice can make a difference.

  • I don’t get it. She is compassionate towards “rape-rape” victims but not “fake-rape” victims?

  • Hmmm. That’s interesting. She’s kind of dismissive of it all, isn’t she. Has she read the court transcripts of the victim’s testimony? Because I think that speaks pretty clearly for itself. I think that what’s interesting in they are saying it was an issue of Whoopi trying to get the charge correct..that’s not what it sounded like to me at all. ~Susan

  • It’s cool that she spoke to you, but give me a break. She didn’t only say “rape rape,” she went on to point out that in other countries, 13 year olds are fair game so let’s not be such judgmental Americans about drugging and sexing up 13 year olds. I mean, they do it in Thailand, so what’s the big whoop? She also sympathized with his choice to run. It wasn’t just the one statement that I have a problem with, it’s her entire position on the subject from beginning to end. And maybe my favorite, “Does that mean I’d want my 14 year old grandaughter to have sex? Not necessarily.” Ummmm…. not necessarily? WTF? Sorry. Banging the gavel on this asshat.

  • that was awesome of sherrie to reply and at least acknowledge this.

  • It was very nice of her to respond, but it obviously goes deeper than what she is willing to concede. I agree with MayoPie, it was her whole stance, not just the one comment.

  • Mandi Bone:

I am glad that you got a reply. But still not ok on what Whoppi said. If you need me to I will write a letter to ABC.

  • Very nice that Sherrie Shepard responded and acknowledged this. I don’t feel a lot of warm fuzzies coming from it all but everyone has their opinion.

That’s the thing about The View: it’s their view. I still disagree.

  • Nic:

oh, my apologies. it’s come to my attention that sherri shepherd’s first name does not include an “e” in it. i guess since there is an “e” in her twitter id, perhaps it’s her middle name… nevertheless, just wanted to clarify that.

Nic, love, you know what I think of you.

I am still struggling to make sense of all of this. There are absolutely moral absolutes on the table, but I’ve always said I wouldn’t want to be in charge of moral absolutes for the whole world. I celebrate that there are different ones out there, even when they exist in direct opposition to mine. So for me personally, this experience has a) made me consider in a whole new way the experience of a sexual abuse survivor and b) made me closely consider what constitutes the kind of offense that makes someone a “write-off”.

For my part, I will keep supporting my amazingly brave friend, standing by her side and holding her up in what I see as an extraordinary act of courage – at the same time, I’ll keep thinking for myself (I think that’s one reason why she likes me anyway *wink*), and like Sherri recommended, will do what I feel is the right thing to do. Killer-letter-writing-skillz-within-me, you’re on-call.

Fight on, Nic. Fight the good fight. I love you.

  • You. Kick. Ass.
I wonder how the hell I’m supposed to teach and protect my kids from acts of insanity and depravity like this, when icons like Whoopi are so… willfuly dismissive of the severity.

    “Rape rape.” Really?

How does this work in other crimes?

    “Well, it wasn’t MURDER murder…”
    “It wasn’t THEFT theft”

    Nah. Doesn’t work.

You keep fighting the good fight Nic. I’ve been deliberatly avoiing blogging about the whole RP thing (since it’s covered elsewhere and my blog readers are in the single digits), but I think I can’t avoid it now.

  • [...] Nic  (whom originally brought all of this to my attention) over at MyBottlesUp contacted Sherri Shepherd with The View, and she responded.  If you’ve checked Nic’s post you can see the [...]

  • I’m so sorry I wasn’t around to support you when all this was going down, but I am SO proud of you for giving ALL OF US a voice within your own. You continue to amaze me! Xoxo
