shit

i found jackson post afternoon nap, climbing like a spider monkey out of his crib. like this…

SHIT

WOO!!!

after calling my husband and my mother, i went to the twittersphere… some said “go to a toddler bed,” others suggested this tent-type thing to place over the crib, and others suggested just going to a regular bed. all opinions and insights were so welcomed because jackson scared THE SHIT out of me… like THE SHIT.

so paul gets home from work and i bombard him with all of this. he asks me if this transition is something that needs to take place “like tonight?” and i respond with “YES!!!” so we remember where the transitional crib/toddler bed rail is that came with his crib. we find the instructions, gather the tools, etc…

in the midst of all of this, many other moms of toddlers have now asked me about this or are in the midst of this dilemma themselves… so i promised photos… here’s what i have so far. both paul and jackson are in the midst of creating crib-gone-toddler-bed as i upload photos and write this post…

ooops!!! wrong one... try again...

advice, ideas, tips for keeping one’s sanity (that may already be lost)… all are welcome!!!

ps- jackson’s crib is from target by DaVinci, incase you’re wondering.

pps- target did not pay me to write the above statement.

*UPDATE* we survived with the magoo staying in his big boy bed all night long. we kept his nighttime routine the same as it was when he was in his crib, and we didn’t hear a peep out of him until we let the dog loose at 7:15 this morning. that’s when jackson got out of his bed and began scratching at the door.

i have placed duct tape over the lock on his side of the door knob in his room until paul and i figure out what contraption we’ll get to cover the door knob. my worst fear would be the magoo accidentally locking himself in his room… TRAUMA for EVERYONE. yikes, we don’t need that. me thinks a trip to babies r us for kiddie proof gear plus dinner OUT is in order for us this evening.

it’ll be interesting to see how nap time goes today… we have shades drawn and dark curtains pulled shut in his room to make it as dark as possible… but still, it’s nap time not nahnight time. paul left for work today, encouraging me to stay strong and if i hear him just playing in there, to keep him in there til his normal wake up time.

wish me luck!!!

  • Woo! We just moved Blythe to her toddler bed about 3 mos ago, and then moved her *again* 2 weeks ago,to a full sized bed because she will no longer sleep alone (thanks, effed up hospital stay!). They grow so fast, don’t they??

Somehow my 27 month old has not figured out this trick yet, but I know it’s just a matter of time. (I’m shielding him from these pictures as we speak…) And he shares a room with our 7 month old so not only would he free to roam, he would also be free to terrorize his little brother should the urge arise. Okay – definitely something to think about. Thanks for the alert! Glad Jackson made his exit without injury!

  • Scary Mommy says:

Awwwwww… what a big boy! And what a little monkey!

  • Nic says:

@ScaryMommy SUCH A MONKEY!!!! he has my mile-long legs and paul’s mile-long torso…. NOT a good combo. wish us luck tonight!!!!

  • jenn says:

Im thinking I never should have nicknamed Brennen; Monkey! nah, both of my boy went through this, your making the right decision, Magoo could have seriously gotten hurt! glad ya actually caught the lil man in action!! now here comes the hard part..keeping him IN the bed to go night night!! Like I said earlier, Dakota was 12 months and Ethan around 15 months when we put them in twin beds…Dakota never had a problem with it. he never got up in the middle of the night to play or anything. We read a story, he had his milk and off to sleep he went. Ethan was the total opposite! ugh at almost 8, he till gets up for the “i gotta pee” “one more drink” “uh mom I forgot to tell you something” love his crib by the way!

As you know, our boys were born within a day of one another so I am dreading this upcoming event. It has not happened yet, but Lord help us all when it does because everything in his room will need to be nailed down. Rambunctious is putting it midly and he’ll be crawling the walls and furniture at night if we’re not careful! I’ll be thinking of you guys tonight!!

I’m waiting for my 19 mo to scare me like this… a matter of days I’m sure. My only advice with the transition is to keep your routine with him EXACTLY the same. I made the mistake of lying in bed with my older one until she fell asleep on her first night in her big girl bed (because she looked so TINY in the bed and I was so emotional about it all) and 2 years later she is STILL making me lie in bed with her. I’m not emotional anymore… just annoyed. Good LUCK!

  • Mandi Bone says:

Amelia used to jump off the top of her baby bed.She was 10 months old. She has always been my wild woman.

  • Otter says:

Congrats on making a big step without any injuries. He is a little dare devil.

  • We had this same issue in the spring and went to a toddler bed. I now wish we had a half door on her room because she leaves her bed all the time in all hours of the night.

He looks mighty proud of his skills tho of escaping!

  • Lisa says:

Some how I have avoided this dilemma so far and my 25 month old daughter has not figured out that she may be able to climb out of her crib, phew (she hasn’t even tried).

I’m sure he’ll do awesome transitioning to the toddler bed. A friend of mine just moved her monkey daughter (19 mths old) into a toddler bed and she has done awesome so far. She said naps are a bit of a trick but night time has been a breeze.

Let me know how it goes ’cause I’m sure I’m right there behind on you on this transition.

  • jackie says:

i have the same problem with my son climbing out of his bed but its at 4 am, its not so fun. For christmas i did purchase a race car toddler bed and I will begin the transition after christmas. i also completely baby proofed his room with a gate on the door aswell in case he does get out in the middle of the night without me knowing. I also use a monitor with a sensor pad that alarms me if he does leave his crib. it a fun time but once hes transitioned it will be safer for him to be in the toddler bed!

  • Rebecca says:

I kept my daughter in the crib until she was 3. Would have kept her in there longer but she started potty training. She never tried to climb out. I was very lucky! She wouldn’t even get out of her toddler bed for the first 6 months or so. She’d just sit there and call out “Mommy! Come get me!”

My son,…..he’s another story. He’s out of his crib, but his crib is still in his room. He wears a brace and kicks it along the bars and wakes me up…>So I put him on one of those fold out couches and that’s where he sleeps…….

  • Had these problems with my third but this is what I did for all 3. Take everything out of the room that you don’t want him to mess with. I’m serious. Currently my boys have no clothes in their dresser drawers, it’s all in baskets in my closet. Get a doorknob cover and put it on the inside of his door so that you can get in easily with no fuss, but he can’t get out. My older son, after a day of this, slept in his bed (we moved him to a twin) and we have never had a problem with him again. My younger son is more of a mischief maker and I hear him moving around the room, but I know that he can’t get hurt since I already took care of that, so I ignore most of it. When I go in to check, he is always back in his bed asleep. Good luck. It usually takes a few days before it gets better, so stay strong and try as many things as you need to to find what works for you.

  • Mamma M says:

You are too funny. Love your blog.

  • Nic says:

@Mamma M- thanks for your sweetness! we’ll see how funny i am when the magoo is spending nap time throwing toys all over his room and emptying his drawers. please pass the wine…

  • Lindsey says:

I confess I embraced the “tent” with my son – it’s really a cage, let’s be honest. He climbed out before he was 2 and I was just not ready for a real bed (and the associated freedom to be up whenever he wanted …) so I got the tent and put it on. He figured out pretty fast how to unzip it, so then I tied a carabiner to the zipper and fastened it to the crib rail … awful, maybe, but he slept soundly and loved his little cage, from which he was liberated when he was 3.5! I am a big crib lover and both of my kids were over 3 when they made the move …
The toddler rail looks awesome, good luck!

  • omg good thinking on the door knob. my kids’ doors don’t have locks but that wouldn’t have occurred to me and omg that would be terrifying. glad the 1st night went well!

  • Nic says:

@Becky i can’t take credit for the door knob or the duct tape… that was all my mom. wonder how she knew to do that… *snort*

  • elle says:

    what a cute crib/toddler bed!

  • DCUrbanDad says:

That is so scary shiznit. We got the toddler rail, but knock on some wood the Mini-Kamp is more interested in sleeping. Plus her torso is where all her height is not the legs.

  • Go, Jackson, go! I love this post because I can genuinely feel your panic (and pride) through the screen. These transitions are both amazing and alarming. Signed Mom whose almost 3yo is still in crib and has never tried to climb out :)

  • Ashley says:

Oh my holy stars! I just want to bite a chuck out of your little munchkin’s bum!! Those pictures are so precious!! Love it.

    Thanks for the crib info.

  • I rue the day when my toddler will not longer be contained in her crib. I seriously am not sure what we will do.

My guess is that saying good-bye to a good night’s sleep will definitely be involved.

Hope all goes well with nap time today!

  • Collette says:

Even though it was 16 years ago, I remember the terrified feeling of my daughter climbing out of her crib. ARGH! It’s enough to make you crazy! Glad you have a bed that you can convert.
About the doorknob…can you take out the lock cylinder? That’s what we did with our bathroom lock when she was little. We have no locks on our bedroom doors, but we were always worried about the bathroom. If you can slide the cylinder out, you can put it back when he gets big enough to use a lock (like when he’s 30…lol)

  • Kellee says:

Well, I obviously have not experienced any of this and will not for some time. I WILL say, however, that when my sister was little, very little, I came in and she was balanced on her stomache… doing the superman-pose… teetering back and forth while trying to reach something sitting on her dresser. Scared the ever loving hell out of me! I can only imagine what it must be like to have that kind of worry. Good job, sweetie. You’ll make it through. :)
