there is snot on my keyboard
i haven’t posted much this week. there hasn’t been much that i can say without nearly hacking up a lung. my head is so congested to the point that when i blow my nose, snot comes out of my left tear duct.
like, of my eye… the left tear duct OF MY EYE.
not. even. joking.
according to my doctor, who diagnosed me yesterday with a “wicked sinus infection,” the reason our nose begins to run right after we start crying is due to our sinuses and our tear ducts all being within close proximity of each other. also, according to my doctor, since i can blow snot out of my left tear duct only, i must have a “loose duct,” whatever the hell that means. i didn’t really care. i just wanted my antibiotics and to blow my nose/eye.
my doctor also chuckled and suggested that i join the circus after i showed her how i can blow snot out of my eye, because “only a select few have such a talent.” i didn’t laugh.
a friend of mine on twitter made a reference to my cold as “the epic snot,” and she could not be more correct. i most definitely have snot of epic proportions. and yes, it is so disgusting.
jackson is sick too, which doesn’t make things any easier. being a sick parent at home with a sick child sucks big hairy donkey balls. like, BIG ONES. i feel so bad for jackson because the poor little guy can’t get comfortable, he’s getting his next set of molars, snot drips from his nose, and when he coughs so loudly, a part of my heart breaks off. it’s so sad to watch little ones be sick.
but then i’m sick on top of it… and in my opinion, sickies hit the parent worse than the child. i don’t know if this is because they have a built up killer immune system that has gone and died in a hole in adults by the time we reach are later 20′s, or what, but i feel like ass and then trying to keep up with my son makes me feel like the hole within the ass.
not. good.
both jackson and i have been to the doctor. he has a cold that i’ve been told will last him 2-3 weeks before he is entirely over it. THAT BLOWS. we have a humidifier running in his room. we traumatize him with saline drops in his nose. he has motrin for when his molars are bothering him. and we watch ice age 3 about 14 times a day so that he can be happy while watching the “BIG ELEDENTS” (elephants) his latest obsession.
you can be the one to tell jackson that they are mammoths and not elephants. i can’t crush his little magoo world any more than i already have.
paul has been so diligent and willing to help out in my exhausted state this week, taking time at lunch to come home and help occupy jackson so i can rest. he is currently enduring a tantrum (probably because jackson wants to watch “the eledents” and paul is sick of “the eledents” and holding his own) while i write this post in my comfy bed and cough up phlegm.
so there is snot on my keyboard, tissues on my nightstand, a z-pack on the sink in our bathroom, and groceries that desperately need to be purchased.
and now paul is getting sick. though he has taken airborne all week long, washed his hands constantly, and gone through multiple bottles of hand sanitizer, paul is coming down with this bitch of a cold.
so we’re taking shifts… errands… household duties… disinfecting… parenting… and still trying to take care of ourselves so that we can get well.
**********
how do you handle it when you’re sick and you have a sick toddler? how do you manage it all? do you manage it all? how much are you able to call upon your partner for help? and when on earth will i get rid of the epic snot?

Hey honey. .so sorry you are not feeling well at all and that precious Magoo is sick too. Poor baby being sick and then molars on top of that is awful. Big hug for you and Magoo hope your honey does not get it as bad as you. And frankly put it’s just hard when the parent and the kids are sick b/c you still have to take care of them even though you feel like a hole within the donkey as you say. Sending you happy thoughts good feelings and hope all is well soon. (hug)

Ugh, parenting while sick sucks a$$. I usually just let Maya watch as many movies as she wants and lay on the couch. It is the worst when they’re sick too, although they are much more inclined to cuddle on the couch then!
Hope you are all feeling better soon. Our house is just starting to get over the 2 week cold. Maya is pretty much all better today, she hasn’t coughed at all for the first day in exactly 2 weeks. The hubs still has it but seems to be slowly getting better. After the first week this crap ass cold does seem to improve a lot.

Wow.
Snot out of your eyeball.
You know Ellen has a talent section on her daytime TV show and I am really thinking you could go somewhere with a talent like that.
Or not.
One of the HUGEST differences I noticed when I had kids was not so much the waking up the middle of the night, sore boobs, and icky C-section scars but the complete and total inability to EVER AGAIN call in sick.
As in NEVER EVER AGAIN!
Its as if when we push that little sweetie out of our bodies the world and everyone in it decides we will never again eat a warm meal, sleep a full 8 hours, or ever be sick again.
At least not like it was before we had kids.
Try to take care of yourself and little Magoo this week. I know that sounds a whole lot easier than it really is but you can do it. You’re the Mommy and you are made of some pretty strong stuff!

Your husband is quite inconsiderate to get sick at the same time as you. Doesn’t he know you need to be WAITED on?
Can you get the snot-out-of-your-eye trick on video?

@Karl, ROFLMAO!!! i’ll pass the word on to paul about what an inconsiderate jackass he is being… and yeah, i’ll work on getting vid of the trick. but i must say, since it has been suggested that i join the circus because of my “gift,” i am leery to put it out there for all to see and steal my secrets.
@Nic, You don’t have to show the top secret prep ritual, with the slapping of the eyes with the orange rinds or anything. Just the trick.

@Karl, well…. since you put it that way….
I am so sorry you are sick and so is the wee one. And, GOD HELP YOU IF THE MAN FALLS…it will be the end of the world as he knows it. (Go here & watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mz6DktXFvg4).
I hope all goes back to normal and you live a normal life of insanity with a toddler in an apartment.
HUGS, Lisa

Ok so here is the deal… I do not a have a toddler. Nor do I have a cold. HOWEVER, the good news is that I have two eight month olds (which technically equals a toddler) and I am on day 4 of the stomach virus from HADES! I will not ooge you out with the details but basically me and the toilet have been best friends since approximately 3 am on Thursday. Uh yeah. So I parented during this whole deal by doing it very slowly. i just couldn’t move as fast as I normally do. Oh also, I didn’t clean anything, wash any clothes or shower-so I mean obviously that helped. And my husband is amazing and helped tons. I don’t think there is a good way to handle it. Especially when the little one is sick too. Hang in there friend and take some Mucinex for your snot
P.S. I did finally shower today, just in case you got grossed out by that whole not showering since Wednesday thing.
P.P.S. Yes my husband still somehow loves me despite my lack of cleanliness over the last four days.

Hope you all feel better soon! As you know, we had a terrible season of sickness and I can offer no pearls of wisdom other than to wait it out and snuggle a lot! And “managing it all?” Never. Not even when I am healthy. “Managing it all” is a big, bad Martha Stewart myth!
@Aidan Donnelley Rowley @ Ivy League Insecurities, yet another good reason for me to loathe that woman…
The pregnant wife has been battling a sinus infection for a month. She finally starting taking medication at the doctor’s request. Our 3 kids have been sick on and off. I credit my wife because I cannot take care of the 3 kids without losing my mind when they are healthy nevermind if I were sick and pregnant (thank god I am a man). All mommies…I tip my hat to you! At least when I am sick I get a sick day….mommies don’t! Hang in there….that’s all I can say because I am a stupid man

I hope you feel better! BTW, I’m totally coveting the tissue box next to the NyQuil in your picture. It’s the little things.

fuuuuuck! so sorry lady! i’ve got one bitch of a head cold myself right now, although thankfully it is sans eyeball snot. it is HORRIBLE being sick and trying to take care of a kid. poppy hasn’t caught whatever garbage this is so far, thank jeebus, but if she does i’m pretty much screwed ’cause i’m already on the brink of insanity!
this post reminds me of the week that david got the swine flu, p got croup and i was sick. seriously wanted to stab myself in the face to make it all go away. sounds like you’re doing the very best you can – i’m all for movies, hunkering down in bed when you can and soliciting help from grandparents if they live close enough. hang in there, darling! happy healing!
xoxoxo.
