behold… the rainbow song

red and orange and green and blue
shiny yellow, purple too
all the colors that i know
make a pretty rainbow

(or something like that…)

surprisingly not on the toilet

laurin evans had this fantastic idea that led to this fantastic post that linked up these fantastic people showing the place(s) in which they create their fantastic work.

the more i take a gander at the workplaces of other bloggers thanks to this groovy experience, the more i have realized a few things about myself as a blogger…

1) good juju is uber important to me when it comes to writing. i need to feel good in the space i work in, in order to create. for me, this translates to not having too much clutter. a certain amount of clutter is fine for me… the beverage cup with sweating condensation… the magoo monitor… the iphone… the book that i’m pretending to spend time reading when i am in fact blogging, skyping, twittering, gchatting instead.

pictured above is a portion of our very large living room with our very large overstuffed chair that accompanies our very large overstuffed sofa (not pictured). and the pillow-topped ottoman makes for a perfect footrest and is good for tossing shit you’re not using on.

2) i need to move from space to space. since getting a macbook from my loving husband, 2 birthdays ago, i’ve been able to blog, edit photos, write, etc from basically anywhere in our apartment. i especially love being able to be flexible and move at any given moment because when the magoo GETS TOO LOUD FOR ME TO EVEN HEAR MYSELF THINK, i can tell my loving husband who gave me said macbook, “i need 10 more minutes” and then exit stage left to another area. usually that will mean that i go here…

pictured above is my office/guest bedroom. i LOVE this space because it has nooks that fit our antique furniture perfectly… and i love me some antique furniture, especially when it is just given to me, like the kidney bean shaped desk that came from my parents. LOVE. IT. having a workspace that is fairly small, like an antique desk, also forces me to cut down on the clutter. bonus!

3) once settled in my spot, wherever that may be, i need to snuggle. i like feeling wrapped in a cocoon-like environment and shutting out the rest of the world when i work. the nook that houses my precious kidney bean desk gives me that awesome nestled feeling.

and lastly… above is my nook. surrounded with photographs, messages of encouragement, artwork of a very good friend. it’s my spot. i dig it.

so there ya have it! where i do what i do… and now to get back to my “real” job… this guy!

orientation

noun- an introduction, as to guide one in adjusting to new surroundings, employment, activity, or the like.

**********

dear jackson,

getting used to new surroundings is something your dad and i have grown accustomed to over the years. you don’t know this yet, but it’s something that you have actually grown accustomed to as well. while it’s never easy to adjust to something unfamiliar and can be scary at times, it is so exciting.

you start school on wednesday, sweet magoo.

at almost 2 and a half years old, you have shown your dad and i just how ready you are to branch out, learn more and share yourself with others. and you cannot wait!

your backpack is ready. you’re already asking to “see new friends, mom?” you even want to ride a school bus, though you have a couple of years ahead of you before you’ll be at that stage.

you’re ready. so ready.

please forgive me if i’m not…

i may need you to hold my hand for a bit, guide me through this adjustment.

just until i get oriented.

i love you, baby boy. i’m so proud of you.

so there’s this guy…

and he wrote a children’s book.

and ALL proceeds from the book are going to charity.

stop swooning ladies, he’s very happily married. seriously. you’re embarrassing me.

jason and i have been friends for quite a while now, though he is shorter than i am. our friendship that has grown over time is a testament to how awesome the blogging community is. jason is the silly, awkward older brother i never had (doodie jokes included) and i could not be happier for him.

you can purchase his book by clicking right here or right here and not only put a smile on a child’s face, but also be a part of a much greater cause.

you can read more about Garden of Dreams by clicking here, and learn how they work “to make dreams come true for kids in crisis.”

congrats, broheim… “proud of you.

wordless wednesday (kinda)

this look… is the look my husband gave me when he asked me to marry him, 7 years ago.

and it’s now the look jackson gives me when he wants to eat cake.

funny how that whole DNA thing works.
